The First Sexual "Play Party" for People With Disabilities Is Happening This Week
"Deliciously Disabled" is a disability-friendly sex party that's set to kick off in Canada this week. And its organizers, Stella Palikarova and Andrew Morrison-Gurza, are looking to tackle what they see as a barrier between the disabled and sexual activity head-on, CBC News reports.
""Access is such a major barrier for people with disabilities. I don't think there's any other group in society that, depending on the level of their physical limitation, can't even pleasure themselves sexually," said Palikarova. She also notes that she thinks many disabled people go through life not feeling like they're desired. "That becomes a really major human rights issue for me," she says.
Although there's a focus on sex at this party, Palikarova wants to be clear that this isn't an orgy. "We are organizing a fully inclusive and accessible 'play party' which is sexual in nature and people are welcome to engage in consensual sex/sexuality and/or nudity, but it is not an 'orgy,'" she told Cosmopolitan.com via email. "We are hoping to provide a safe and fun space for people of all (dis)abilities, genders, orientations, bodies etc to express themselves sexually, to just come and mingle, and to feel sexy!" And although it's designed to cater to the disabled, Palikarova says it's not disability exclusive.
Palikarova and Morrison-Gurza had planned this event months ago, but had trouble finding a venue that was not only wheelchair accessible and friendly, but also cool with the potential for nudity and sex. But they found a location in the Buddies in Bad Times Theater in Toronto, coincidentally at the same time the Parapan Am Games are being held in the city. The games alone will bring over 1,000 disabled athletes to the area.
